What is Covered by Parts A, B, C, D of Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance plan that's generally accessible to US residents when they reach age 65. Medicare is also broken into four parts: A, B, C, and D. Here's a quick breakdown of what's covered for each of the parts of Medicare.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is one of the Original Medicare options. It's designed to cover inpatient hospital care, as well as medically necessary home health services, skilled nursing, and hospice care. This option is for those US residents who paid Medicare taxes while working.

Medicare Part B

Part B is another of the Original Medicare plan options... but this one is optional. It also costs money. US residents who enroll in Part B pay a monthly premium, but it covers outpatient care, as well as doctor's appointments and another medical cost. Deductibles and co-pays may apply, but Plan B does cover medically necessary services.

Medicare Part C

Part C is just one of the Medicare Advantage Plans in NH (and other states), so it's an "all-in-one" solution offered by private insurance companies that must be approved and contracted by Medicare. It's sometimes called an MA Plan for short. To make matters a bit more convoluted, there are also the types of Medicare Medical Advantage programs: Special Needs Plans, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans, Private Fee for Service (PFFS) Plans, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans, and Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans. You are probably familiar with at least some terminology for the types of programs, due to the insurance coverage you've held over the years. In general, Part C offers the same coverage as Part A and B (and often Part D as well), but Medicare Advantage Plans in Maine (and other states) may include some additional benefits that make it worth the extra monthly premium. For example, the Medicare Part C may cover things like vision care, dental, and hearing; but you must verify specific coverage benefits with the private insurance company you select. The services for Medicare Part C are not paid for by Original Medicare.

Medicare Part D

Part D is designed as a solution for those who need a prescription drug plan. Part D is also offered by private companies that are approved by Medicare, so it involves a monthly premium, and it's also available as a Medicare Advantage Plan. Depending on the private insurance company and your situation, you may also have options for cost and coverage.

Medical Supplemental Insurance
In addition to the standard Parts A, B, C, D of Medicare, there are also options for Medigap or Medicare Supplement Plans in NH (and other states). This type of plan is another way for you to pay premiums to private insurance companies to supplement the gaps in coverage like deductibles, co-pays, and other medical costs that are not covered. This Medicare Supplement plans in Maine (and other states) apply to US residents who are eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B.
